The self-contained commercial refrigerators and freezers listed here do not include refrigerated buffet tables and refrigerated preparation/deli tables.
Since April 1, 2007, self-contained commercial refrigerators, freezers and refrigerator-freezers are subject to Canada's Energy Efficiency Regulations. For both open and closed models Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) must receive a report with third party energy efficiency verified performance data. However only units with doors or drawers must meet minimum energy performance levels.
The lower the daily energy consumption (kWh/day), the more energy efficient. The ratings presented here were all done under standard conditions. With the same technology, an upright unit will consume more than a chest unit and a closed unit more than an open reach-in unit. Also remember that a wine chiller is tested at a higher temperature than a refrigerator and an ice-cream freezer is tested at a lower temperature than a regular freezer. How a unit is used and located will affect its actual energy consumption.
Currently there are only ENERGY STAR® performance levels for models with solid /opaque doors.
